KENYA NURSES THREATEN NATIONWIDE HEALTH STRIKE

The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) has served the government with a one-week ultimatum ahead of what could be a nationwide health services strike. The union says unresolved grievances about pay, staffing shortages, and working conditions could disrupt essential health services across Kenya starting 23 January 2026. Nurses are a critical backbone of Kenya’s health system, especially in rural and underserved regions. A mass walkout would strain already stretched hospitals and clinics, potentially delaying care from preventive services to emergency treatment. Government officials have acknowledged the labor impasse but have yet to publicly offer a settlement that satisfies union demands, raising concerns among health experts about patient impact if the strike proceeds. The standoff underscores broader global pressures on health workforces, from burnout to inadequate compensation, which many countries face post-pandemic as they try to sustain service quality with limited resources.
