The European Commission has unveiled a strategic investment of €307 million in artificial intelligence and other advanced digital technologies, reinforcing the bloc’s ambition to compete with the U.S. and China in emerging tech sectors. The funding aims to accelerate research, innovation, and deployment of AI across industries including health, transportation, and defense.
This initiative is part of a broader EU effort to strengthen technological sovereignty, reduce dependence on foreign tech, and ensure that European values guide AI development. Funds will be allocated to public-private partnerships, research institutions, and startups working on next-generation AI systems.
Officials emphasized that the investment will support ethical, transparent AI that respects human rights and democratic norms — a core tenet of EU regulation such as the AI Act. This contrasts with more commercially driven tech ecosystems elsewhere, signaling Europe’s desire to lead on both innovation and governance.
The funding also dovetails with broader digital transformation targets across the EU, including boost to semiconductor design, high-performance computing, and digital skills training for citizens, aiming for resilience in future tech competition.
