EUROPEAN UNION LABELS IRAN’S REVOLUTIONARY GUARD AS TERRORIST ORGANIZATION

The European Union has taken the decisive step of designating Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This move is one of the most serious escalations in EU-Iran relations in recent years and follows international criticism of Tehran’s crackdown on domestic protests. The designation means that assets linked to the IRGC within EU jurisdictions face freezing and that individuals or entities that provide material support could face prosecution. EU leaders, including foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, justified the decision as necessary to hold Iran accountable for human rights abuses and regional behavior. Iran responded harshly, condemning the designation as politically motivated and claiming that it would only inflame regional tensions. Tehran’s state media reiterated its stance that internal security operations and military activities are sovereign responsibilities. Analysts view the development as likely to complicate diplomatic efforts aimed at nuclear negotiations and regional stability, as European states now find themselves aligning more closely with sanctions regimes already maintained by the U.S., Canada, and Australia.
