EU OFFICIALLY DESIGNATES IRAN’S REVOLUTIONARY GUARD TERRORIST ORGANIZATION

On 29 January 2026, the European Union formally labeled Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, marking one of the most consequential diplomatic shifts in recent EU-Middle East policy. This designation signifies a formal acknowledgment by Brussels that IRGC activities — including its involvement in regional conflicts and domestic repression — meet the criteria for terrorism, carrying legal and financial sanctions across EU member states. Leaders across Europe, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, characterized the move as “a moral and strategic necessity,” arguing it aligns the EU with democratic values and solidarity with the Iranian people. They emphasized that the decision has been in deliberation amid continuing tensions over Tehran’s nuclear pursuits and regional proxy engagements. Iran’s government responded with intense criticism, denouncing the designation as hypocritical and asserting it would only escalate geopolitical tensions. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused the EU of ignoring other global issues while selectively targeting Tehran, framing the decision as a political maneuver rather than a principled stance. As part of the decision, the EU also announced coordinated sanctions on several Iranian officials and IRGC-linked groups, aimed at freezing assets and restricting their ability to operate within EU jurisdictions. The bloc simultaneously pledged €145 million in humanitarian support to Ukraine, signaling an integrated approach to broader geopolitical conflicts.
